In the European Union (EU), the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), Regulation (EU) 2025/40, has now replaced the previous Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD). While certain phases of this new regulation will be introduced at later, pre-defined stages, it is generally applicable as of now.
This legislation applies to all packaging: primary (e.g. a box containing a hairdryer), secondary (e.g. banding or shrink-wrap to hold together multiple SKUs) and tertiary (e.g. pallets, etc. to hold multiple SKUs or to carry a single, large machine). Hence, it will affect the majority of companies whenever they export into the EU or Great Britain, as similar legislation is in place in the UK too.
While you may not be the actual producer of the packaging, you are considered to be the producer of it when your product is first placed on either of the markets.
Given the stronger evidence, conformity and market-surveillance expectations and also that noncompliant packaging may be subject to corrective action, withdrawal, recall, or market restrictions, are you ready for this new legislation?
