What is MAS?

The Manufacturing Advisory Service was launched in 2002 by the government and is funded by BIS (The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills) through the nine English Regional Development Agencies.

MAS aims to help manufacturers improve their business by streamlining processes, reducing waste and becoming more energy efficient. MAS aims to help UK manufacturers to compete in the global market.

Who can MAS Help?

MAS services are open to any company provided they are engaged in manufacturing regardless of size. Although MAS mainly provide support for SMEs (Small/ Medium Enterprises), larger companies can also benefit. Subsidised project support is available to SMEs.

SME stands for Small and Medium Enterprises. Through MAS SMEs can qualify for financial support for projects. Your company can call itself an SMEs is:

• it has less than 250 employees

• it has an annual turnover of no more than £34m or a balance sheet total not exceeding approximately £29m

• it is independent*.

*Definition: Less than 25 per cent of your company will be owned by one or more enterprises which don’t meet the definition above, except for investments held by public investment corporations, venture capital companies or institutional investors provided no control is exercised.

If your company is an SME you could be eligible for funding to help you CE mark a product. Conformance is currently an approved supplier to MAS East Midlands and MAS West Midlands, MAS Yorks. and Humberside, and is in the processes of becoming approved for other areas.
